What is the Citizens Utility Board?

Since 1984, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) has been Illinois premier nonprofit, nonpartisan consumer-advocacy group devoted to lowering your gas, electric, and telephone bills.

What is CUB Energy Saver?

CUB Energy Saver is a free online energy advisory service provided by the Illinois Citizens Utility Board (CUB). CUB Energy Saver is the first online service that provides personalized energy savings recommendations and rewards you based on how much energy you actually save!

CUB Energy Saver provides tools that:

  • Create ways for you to save money while benefiting the planet.
  • Empower you to engage with your local community to help solve critical energy and environmental issues.
  • Reward smart decisions with discounts at national retailers.

How much does it cost to participate in CUB Energy Saver?

CUB Energy Saver is a free program! There is no cost to participate in CUB Energy Saver.

Program Eligibility

Who is eligible to sign up for the program?

Participation is limited to residents of the state of Illinois. You do not need to be a ComEd customer to sign up for CUB Energy Saver. However, only ComEd customers are eligible to earn rewards points for reducing their monthly energy bill.

If you are not a ComEd customer, but are a customer of a different Illinois utility, you can sign up for CUB Energy Saver to get customized energy savings tips. However, you will not be able to link your utility account with your CUB Energy Saver account or earn points for saving energy.

We hope to expand CUB Energy Saver to support other utility customers in the future. We encourage you to contact your utility to indicate your interest in the program.

I am not a customer of ComEd. Can I still participate?

Yes! You do not need to be a ComEd customer to sign up for CUB Energy Saver. However, only ComEd customers are eligible to earn rewards points for reducing their monthly energy bill.

If you are not a ComEd customer, but are a customer of a different Illinois utility, you can sign up for CUB Energy Saver to get customized energy savings tips. However, will not be able to link your utility account with your CUB Energy Saver account or earn points for saving energy.

I am a customer of ComEd, but I have chosen another company as my energy supplier. Can I still participate in CUB Energy Saver?

Yes! You can participate in CUB Energy Saver, even if you have selected a third-party company as your energy supplier. All ComEd customers, regardless of your energy supplier, are eligible to participate in the rewards program. However, in order to earn rewards for saving energy, you must agree to share your kWh usage data with CUB Energy Saver by linking your ComEd account.

I'm concerned about privacy and sharing my energy usage information. Can I still participate in the program?

To participate in the rewards program, you must agree to share your kWh usage data with CUB Energy Saver by linking your ComEd account.

After you link your ComEd account, CUB Energy Saver will receive your total kilowatt-hour (kWh) electricity usage on a monthly basis from ComEd. CUB Energy Saver does not share this information with anyone else. All savings recommendations are estimates based on assumptions that rely on your usage history, publicly available information and any other information you provide.

How to Sign Up

Where do I go to sign up?

Visit www.cubenergysaver.com and click on the red "Register Now" button.

What do I need to sign up?

To sign up, you must provide your name, email address, and zip code. ComEd customers must provide their ComEd utility account number.

I am a ComEd customer, but don’t have my ComEd account number right now. Can I input my account number later?

Yes! You do not need to link your ComEd account to your CUB Energy Saver as soon as you sign up. You may come back and input your ComEd account number at a later time. However, you will not earn any rewards points until your ComEd utility account is linked to CUB Energy Saver.

How do I confirm my email address?

When we ask you to confirm your email address, visit your email address inbox and look for a confirmation email from CUB Energy Saver. The email will contain a link that you must click to verify your email address.

I can't log in to my CUB Energy Saver account. What should I do?

Please try resetting your password by clicking the “Forgot Password” link on the sign in page. You will be asked to provide your email address. Within minutes, you will receive an email with a link that you must click on to reset your password.

If you still can't login with your new password, please send an email to and we'll help you regain access to your CUB Energy Saver account.

Rewards

How do I earn points?

Only customers of ComEd are eligible to earn points for reducing your monthly energy bill. In order to earn rewards points, you must link your ComEd utility account to your CUB Energy Saver account.

When you reduce your monthly energy bill, you will earn points in the CUB Energy Saver program. For every killowatt-hour in energy savings compared to the prior year, you will earn 2 points. For example: Use 100 kWh less in June of this year compared to June of the prior year, and earn 200 points. Your energy savings is calculated by taking one month of your energy usage and comparing it against your energy usage the prior year. Changes in weather are taken into account when calculating your savings.

You can earn a maximum of 5,000 points per year.

Your points will expire 12 months from the date of award.

Who is eligible to earn points?

Only customers of ComEd are eligible to earn points for reducing your monthly energy bill. In order to earn rewards points, you must link your ComEd utility account to your CUB Energy Saver account.

You must have lived in your current address for a minimum of 12 months to earn points for reducing your monthly energy bill.

All CUB Energy Saver users are eligible to earn points for enrolling in the Energy Saver program and for completing their Home Profile.

Your points will expire 12 months from the date of award.

Can I earn points for saving natural gas?

Only customers of ComEd are eligible to earn points.

You can only earn points for reducing your electricity usage. Using natural gas, fuel oil and other fuels more efficiently should be part of your overall energy efficiency goals, but you will only earn points for your electricity savings.

How do seasonal differences in how I use energy affect my ability to earn points?

CUB Energy Saver accounts for weather and climate factors when analyzing your energy usage, so you are not penalized due to changes in season or drastic weather effects.

Your savings and points are based on comparing your bill to your past behavior and we control for changes in weather. This means you can still earn points regardless of weather effects.

When do I get my points?

You automatically get 100 points for signing-up. These points will be added to your CUB Energy Saver account as soon as you sign-up.

You can also earn points for completing your Home Profile. Once you complete 100% of the questions in the Home Profile, you will automatically receive 200 points.

Points for saving energy are awarded after we receive your billing data for the past billing period from ComEd. For most ComEd customers, we receive your billing data every month, but billing cycles can differ. Points for saving energy are typically awarded every 30 – 45 days.

You can earn a maximum of 5,000 points per year.

What type of rewards are offered?

CUB Energy Saver offers a variety of rewards from both local and national retailers.

How do I redeem my points?

Visit the Rewards page to see what rewards are available. Click on the Redeem button next to the reward you would like.

Gift card rewards will be emailed to you within minutes.

Rewards from local retailers will be mailed or emailed to you within two weeks.

CUB Energy Saver takes educated guesses about the ways you use energy and your lifestyle preferences. Our guesses are right more often than not, but we can't be right all the time! Not every household fits perfectly into the profile we create for you. That means we need your help to better understand your home's specific qualities, so the more information you tell us, the more accurate we can make our advice and tracking. How are dollar savings on the Ways to Save page determined?

The dollar savings for each action depends on the type of action being performed, and the energy profile of your home. For a detailed explanation of how an action's savings number is calculated, see \"How We Calculate Savings\" at the right of each individual action page. The action page often provides a way to further specify how you are or will be performing the action that may impact the yearly savings calculation.

Information about your home profile is based on educated guesses. Updating the information to be more accurate may change the savings calculations. To update the information about your home, go to the Profile page.

Some of the information about my home on the CUB Energy Saver Profile page is incorrect. What do I do?

CUB Energy Saver takes educated guesses about your household's energy profile based on your zip code or actual address. Please edit any inaccurate information as it will help us give you better advice and track your savings more effectively. If you aren't sure if a piece of information is correct, we recommend leaving it as it is.
